Section Templates: Save, Reuse and Apply Product Layouts

Official guide · English · Version 9c253d0cf11816df

Use Storefront > Content > Section templates to maintain reusable layouts for pages, blog articles and products. A storefront theme controls the store's overall appearance; a section template controls the arrangement of a document's content. Changing one does not automatically replace the other.

Save a layout as a template

  1. Open a saved product's Page Builder, or the Section Editor for a page or blog article.
  2. Arrange the sections and inspect Mobile, Tablet and Desktop previews.
  3. Select Save as template, beside Template library in the Section Editor toolbar. You can also open Template library and use its naming form.
  4. Enter a descriptive template name and select Save as template in the dialog.
  5. Wait for the saved confirmation. Open Template library and find the entry under Saved store templates.

Saving creates a reusable design in this store's library. It does not publish a page or assign the design to every product. Keep the required live product purchase block; a valid product layout contains exactly one purchase block. Validation errors link to the affected sections: correct them before trying to save or publish again.

If the button is missing, check that you are in the Section Editor. The legacy Visual Editor has a separate format and controls. An empty section tree cannot be saved as a template. Access to editing also depends on your role.

Load an independent copy

  1. Open Template library in the intended editor.
  2. Select a ready-made design or choose Load copy beside a saved design.
  3. Confirm replacement of the current layout, if prompted.
  4. Review the loaded sections and edit them for this document.
  5. Save the draft or publish using that document's own controls. For a product, select Publish layout.

Loading is undoable and does not publish automatically. It keeps the document's other content and SEO settings. A copied layout is independent: later edits to the original template do not change the copy. For products, choosing a template from the Layout source selector creates a shared link instead of a detached copy.

Service Section Editors also offer their own Template library and ready-made designs. Use that editor for service layouts; the shared store/category defaults described below apply to product pages. Page, article and service designs must be saved or published using their respective document controls after loading.

Apply one template across products

  1. Save a product layout as a template.
  2. Open Storefront > Design > Default product content template.
  3. Select the saved template and wait for the confirmation. This selector saves its choice immediately.
  4. Open several product pages to verify the result, including products from different categories.

The store default applies to products that inherit their layout. Products with a linked template, an enabled custom design or a primary-category template retain that higher-priority choice. To return an individual product to inheritance, open its Page Builder, expand Page source and help, choose Use category / store default under Layout source, and select Publish layout. In the category editor, choose the inherited product-template option if the category should also use the store default.

The layout selection order is:

Priority Layout used
1 Product's linked template
2 Product's enabled custom design
3 Primary category's product template
4 Store's default product content template
5 Standard product page

Selecting a store default does not overwrite existing custom designs. There is no blanket replacement of every product override in this workflow. A shared template uses each product's own live name, description, images, price, variants and availability; do not type a fixed example price into a reusable text block.

Open its Page Builder, expand Page source and help, select Linked template: your template name in Layout source, then choose Publish layout. Future updates to that saved template affect this product. Editing the linked sections in the product editor creates a custom draft; publishing that edited draft makes it independent.

Publishing Use category / store default retains the detached design as a draft while the inherited layout becomes active. Publish changes before selecting Preview published page; this preview shows the published layout rather than unsaved canvas edits. Buying and review submission are disabled in an editor preview: test these on the public site.

Update or delete a saved template

  1. Open Section templates and select the appropriate Pages, Blog articles or Products tab.
  2. Use Template library to load the saved design you own, then edit its sections.
  3. Reopen Template library and select Update loaded template.
  4. Read the confirmation and wait for success. If another session changed the template, reload the current version before retrying.

Updating a product template changes the layout of products linked directly or through category/store defaults. Independent copies stay unchanged. Deleting a product template makes linked products and categories fall back to their inherited layout. Page and article copies remain after their source template is deleted. Templates offered by the platform can be loaded but cannot be edited as store-owned entries.

Place specifications below the description

In the Section Editor, put Product description and Product specifications in separate top-level sections, in that order. Placing both inside the same Row / Columns section displays them beside each other on wide screens. Inspect the Sections navigator and responsive row settings, then publish. If the public page still differs, check Layout source and higher-priority category/product overrides.

Verify publication on a VPS

Saved shared-template changes and published product layouts trigger website publication automatically. Check Multichannel > Linked Stores > Linked website on VPS for pending delivery or errors. Wait for publication to finish, then reload a sample public product. An older VPS application may require Deploy > Website updates to support newly released template components; Sync now publishes data without replacing the application.
